Workshops for the under-priviledged

Interested in an opportunity to prepare a short workshop and enhance your presentation skills? The Ryerson Golden Key Society has teamed up with the YMCA and Gerrard Resource Centre to host drop-in sessions by students to empower under-privileged mothers in Regent Park. This is an excellent opportunity to give back to the community by sharing your unique skills and abilities.

The ideal times for the workshops to be held are Monday to Thursday 10-11am and Thursday 6-7pm. Ideally the workshop should be 20-30 minutes, and allow for 30 minutes of question and discussion. Topics suggested include any of the following (but feel free to be creative):

- Family life (e.g. relationships)
- Personal Taxes (how to do it)
- Cooking (e.g. demonstrate a family recipe)
- Canadian history (e.g. for citizenship)
- Fashion advice (e.g. how to be frugal and stylish)
- Canadian politics (e.g. why vote)
- How to start a small business
- Dance (e.g. teach a routine)
- Career (e.g. help them with resumes, interview technique)
- Writing (e.g. demonstrate letter writing)
- Literature (e.g. setup a book club)
- Language (basic expressions in different languages!)
- Math (e.g. basic problems)
- Science (e.g. put on a show)

If you are interested in volunteering, prepare a basic outline outlining the workshop you want to conduct. Please submit your outline to Jennifer Yoon at yoon.jenny@gmail.com / vp@nso-eio.ca.

Books For Africa
As a part of our literacy initiative, Ryerson Golden Key is working hand-in-hand with Better World Books to bring the “Books for Africa” book drive to Ryerson. By donating your used university/college level textbooks, you can help underprivileged students in Africa to achieve and reach their full potentials.

Better World Books collects textbooks from universities and colleges across North America. By selling the textbooks online to students in North America, they are able to then purchase educational material and textbooks with locally relevant content for in support of the Books for Africa Initiative. “Books for Africa” is an organization that collects, sorts, ships and distributes books to children in Africa.

Drop Box Locations

The “Books for Africa” book drive is a campus wide event. We have drop boxes set up in various locations:

Jorgenson Hall – Main Entrance, Ground Floor
Library Building – Information Centre, Lower Ground Level
Business Building – 7th Floor
Rogers Communication Centre – Gould Street Entrance
Engineering Building – Church Street Entrance
SHE Building – Lobby

Books that qualify for the book drive:

• College textbooks and study guides (with copyright dates from the past 5 years)
• Any book used in a university/college class
• Workbooks (with no missing pages)
• In general, books that cover college subject matter.

Highlighting and/or writing in books is fine, and accompanying CD’s are great to send along as well.

Books that do not qualify for the book drive: • Course packets (made at a copy center, not technically a book)
• Custom publications (when a professor compiles a ‘book’ specific to a class)
• Academic Journals or Literary Criticisms
• Encyclopedia sets
• Magazines or Periodicals
• Books in poor condition (dirty, moldy, missing pages, torn/missing cover, excessive water damage, etc)

Join us on a reading adventure!

Two students are required every week to volunteer with the Sicks Kids Hospital Reading Room every Friday at 11:00AM, beginning September 28 right through til November 30th.

Don't worry if you're a novice, come in early and practice 15 minutes before with the room attendant.

The reading session will last 40 minutes. All participants will receive a certificate of appreciation, but the time you spend reading with these children will never be forgotten!

If you are interested in taking part in this opportunity, please email Jennifer Yoon at yoon.jenny@gmail.com, with the following information:

1. Your full name and phone number at which you can be reached 2. Specific date - which Friday (you may suggest up to three) best fits your schedule. We will confirm with you which dates are available.

Thank you for helping make a difference in the community with the Ryerson Golden Key Society.
