Junior Achivers Volunteer Opportunity

Golden Key Ryerson and the Student Community Involvement Association (SCIA) invites you to partake in an amazing volunteer opportunity to encourage young students to "stay in school"!

GK and SCIA Presents the 3rd Annual Junior Achievement Volunteer Information Session:

Junior Achievement will be recruiting Ryerson University volunteers (students) on April 10th, 2008 to participate in their Economics of Staying in School program; with over 700 grade 8 students from Toronto schools partaking in this one day event held of May 14th 2008. Ryerson volunteers will be mentors for the day and help make an impact in the lives of Canada's youth.

Upon completion of this one day event each volunteer will receive a personalized letter and certificate of achievement from Junior Achievement.

The specific purpose of the Economics of Staying in School program is to have students consider and reflect on the advantages of remaining in school until they have acquired the knowledge, attitudes and skills to undertake the long-term goals of a successful career in the Canadian and world economies. This program offers the value of staying in school by having students envision the lifestyle they want and what is needed to attain it as opposed to being simply told that they should stay in school.

Junior Achievement will be having an information session to recruit and answer questions on April 10th, 2008. Successful volunteers who are selected will be asked to complete a 2-hour training session on May 5th, 2008 at the Ryerson Campus. The actual volunteer date will be in a Grade 8 class in the GTA area on Wednesday May 14, 2008.

The location and time of the events will be notified closer to the dates. Please RSVP at sciaryerson@gmail.com and mention that you are a golden key member.

Hi GKers!

The semester is winding down and the executive team wishes all of you tremendous success for the rest of the school year! You have all been working very hard for the last couple of years to gain the knowledge that you have, so why not put it to good use!?
The Ryerson Golden Key Chapter, in connection with the Toronto District School Board, is going to be holding technology information workshops for elementary schools and middle schools in Toronto!

Session ideas include:
- Teaching Middle school students how to operate cameras and use editing software to create documentaries to submit to CTV
- Teaching students how to make school newspapers, using proper software and format
- Teaching students about the stock market and perhaps setting up a mock business, stock, etc
- Teaching students simple typing techniques
- Teaching students basic Microsoft Office programs (Powerpoint, Excel, Word)

And More!!!! Do you have an idea for a workshop that we can do? Are YOU interested in sitting on an executive team to make these happen?
Workshop organizing will be slowly happening as the school year winds down, however workshops themselves will happen in MAY 2008.

Contact Tamara Lang at tlang@ryerson.ca for more information or if you have any more ideas. A full list of available software is available via email contact as well. This is a great way to leave a mark within the community and Golden Key! Why not put your knowledge into good use!?!

GK Ryerson Discussion Board

We have setup a discussion board in order to enhance the networking opportunities provided by the chapter and open the lines of communication amongst the chapter members.

Finding other students who have excelled academically like you is a challenge that the discussion board will help overcome. Please use this discussion board to find other students for study groups or assignments. If interested, insert the course code in the subject line and in the message clearly indicate what you are seeking and provide your personal contact information.

The discussion board can also be used for anything you feel will assist you in your academics - seeking past tests, questions, selling/ buying textbooks, etc.
